I took a boat through 96 million black plastic balls on the Los Angeles reservoir to find out why they’re there. The first time I heard about shade balls the claim was they reduce evaporation. But it turns out this isn’t the reason they were introduced.
Huge thanks to LADWP for arranging this special tour for me. Next time let’s put the GoPro on the submersible!
The balls are made of high density polyethylene (HDPE) which is less dense than water so they float on the surface of the reservoir even if they break apart. They are 10cm (4 inches) in diameter and contain about 210ml of water. So the main reason they are on the reservoir is to block sunlight from entering the water and triggering a chemical reaction that turns harmless bromide into carcinogenic bromate. This effect occurs with prolonged exposure to bromate so regulators insist that levels be kept below 10 microgram per liter on average over a 12 month period.

06.05.2022I have a massive swimming pool at home which I would like to change into a water reservoir. I need help desperately because I have googled topic and only found this video. It might be the answer. My questions are:
Where may I purchase these shade balls?
How to work out the number of balls needed?
Do I immediately discontinue the chlorine after placing balls, and what other treatment should be added to water?
I'm living in South Africa and unfortunately our city, Mangaung, had a corrupt municipality. Their services such as refuse removal, water purifying, water supply, electricity supply, not even going into health and protection services; is continually being unavailable or disrupted for long periods.
I have to start thinking out of the box here and share survival mode skills with my fellow citizens. Any info shall be greatly appreciated.

05.05.2022This story was really to cover up a drought problem. "It’s not a magic water-saving tactic; it’s a PR move."
So bromate is eliminated; but ecological issues increased, bacterial growth, carbon emissions, cancer from polyethylene and tiny microplastics found in the drinking water were created. 🤦🤦♀️
The 300 million gallons a year these plastic balls are supposed to save is really not a whole lot, especially compared to the amount of water used by industry and agriculture. Fracking alone uses 2.14 million gallons of fresh water in California every day.
