Very uneven surface. We play the same way, but don't even mark off a court. Throw balls onto hillsides, into sand at parks, even under trees. Not official bocce, but I like it with variety, kind of like golf 🙂
We play with different rules on a square court. Game begins and is scored the same way. The team scoring first then tosses the Object ball And all other balls are tosses from where they were, do not gather up the balls; like golf, you play from your lie. Thus there’s a lot of strategy when tossing the Object Ball. IF your team is closer when having the last shot, you can try to get close earning more points OR you can drop your ball where you stand, or far away from your opponents balls. Since your team is closer, you get to toss the Object ball back to the ball you dropped. And since you always toss the ball from your lie, one of you balls should be very close to the Object Ball giving you a short toss. You have to be at least 3 feet away from the Object ball when you toss. Sometimes your dropping from you waist directly over the other balls.
