From a game thats played with feet to one with hips and elbows. The first organized sporting event in history is thought to have been a game played with a ball 3,500 years ago. It was played all across Meso-america by the Aztecs. But more than just a game it was a ritual. Valeria Leon reports on the game making a comeback.

15.04.2023If Tennis was invented by handless people who dreamed of playing basketball.
I'm guessing the Aztecs didnt understand kicking, unless theres more of a spiritual reason they're not allowed to kick the ball. "Dive and only use your elbows" These players would be hospitalized more often than American Football players… Just play tennis, futbol, or basketball and admit that the Aztecs made a subpar pastime.

14.04.2023bro this is not how they played it at all lol.
They had a heavy ball, they can only use their KNEES, THIGHS, CHEST, BACK and SHOLDERS! And on OPPOSITE ENDS, TWO CPATIANS WOULD HAVE STICKS TO HIT THE BALL IN THE HOOP.
I visited the site last week with a Mayan tour.

14.04.2023Pagan sun worship at the sun, moon, serpent temples. Head was decapitated off winner or loser or both… archeologists don’t know which. The stone statue god in the Mexico museum was decapitated and handless with blood squirting out and hands and hearts hung around the neck as a necklace. It also has a skirt of snakes.

14.04.2023I would love to see this sport coming in and taking over. This sport is like a combo of Soccer, and Basketball to get her but in a different way.
Not gonna lie but if y'all read or watch the Harry Potter books or movie there is a game that they have that looks like this but I now it's not. My mind sometimes looks at so many sports to see the comparison.

12.04.2023Weird they use they elbows rather then their feet. Is that a historical restriction? It’s a heavy ball so I wouldn’t “boot it”, but a skilled player could surely lift if for an advantage

11.04.2023This ball game was not restricted to the Aztecs, of course, but was played by nearly all Mesoamerican cultures, notably the Mayans, who called it Pok ta Pok. Archaeologists have uncovered rubber balls dating to at least 1600 BC, ballgamer figures from at least 1200 BC, and nearly 1500 ancient ball courts.
Due to its religious and ritual aspects, Spanish Catholics suppressed the game soon after the Spanish conquest. It survived in areas such as Sinaloa, where Spanish influence was less pervasive. It’s great to see, as part of its nationwide revival, the game now has a home in the capital Mexico City, at a cultural centre in the Azcapotzalco neighbourhood.

11.04.2023Sánchez, Cervantes, Leon…. all last names with spanish heritage, but they all look like indians. The spanish empire was the best of all empires, spanish and americans mixed together to form hispanoamerican people, a blend of two worlds. But the english came with their families and the intention to depredate everything and kill all natives in north america. And we hispanic people are the bad guys?
